A new call for applications has been announced for the Youth Food Waste Ambassador Programme, inviting pupils from the regions of Latvia to take an active role in reducing food waste in their schools and communities. The programme is part of the international initiative “
Food for the Future : A Cross-Baltic School-to-Community Approach to Zero Waste”, which promotes sustainable food consumption and practical solutions to prevent food waste.
The Youth Food Waste Ambassadors programme empowers pupils aged 12 and above to become leaders of change by equipping them with knowledge, tools and support to implement food waste reduction activities in their schools. Participants will take part in dedicated training sessions, including thematic activities during the Eco-Schools Winter Forum, followed by regular online meetings and mentoring. In addition to building knowledge about sustainability and responsible food consumption, the programme supports the development of pupils’ leadership, communication and teamwork skills.
Throughout the programme, youth ambassadors will organise food waste reduction challenges at their schools, create social media content to raise awareness, and engage their peers in practical action. In the summer, participants from across Latvia will gather for a two-day forum to share achievements, reflect on progress in reducing food waste, and take part in outdoor team-building activities.
The initiative offers an opportunity for schools in Latvia’s regions located outside of major cities to join an international movement working towards schools and communities with less food waste. The programme is open to schools located outside Latvia’s ten major cities - Daugavpils, Jelgava, Jēkabpils, Jūrmala, Liepāja, Ogre, Rēzekne, Rīga, Valmiera and Ventspils.
Applications must be submitted by 20 February via the online application form.
The project “Food for the Future: A Cross-Baltic School-to-Community Approach to Zero Waste” is implemented by Danish Cultural Institute in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in cooperation with Foundation for Environmental Education, Embassy of Denmark in Latvia and Embassy of Sweden in Latvia and supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers.
